Implementation framework for sustainable and future-proof communities
The 2000-Watt Smart Cities stands for sustainable future living. Living a comfortable and healthy life today is a challenge due to various environmental and man-made issues. Local regulatory and government agencies intend to address these challenges to improve citizens’ quality of life. A major challenge to building a sustainable future is the increasing stress on urban infrastructure. With the mission of building and operating 2000-Watt Smart Cities, the 2000-Watt Society has developed a series of research-driven solutions for smart and sustainable living. This mission is also envisaged as a social and local economic booster force towards a sustainable future The 2000-Watt Society is an environmental vision introduced in 1998 by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. This concept is about reducing the overall average primary energy usage rate to no more than 2000 watts per person and the greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, while also improving the quality of life at the same time.
2000-Watt Society is founded by ETH Zurich.
Nuesch Development together with municipal authorities starts to conceptualize Greencity Zurich.
The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) launches the 2000-Watt Site certification. First Certificate is awarded to Greencity Zurich site development.
Construction of Greencity Zurich starts.
Switzerland votes in favour of Energy Strategy 2050 with 2000-Watt target by 2035.
The SFOE endorses the 2000-Watt Smart Cities Initiative as the worldwide promoter of the certification.
The Initiative becomes the 2000-Watt Smart Cities Association with the goal of creating a framework for smart cities around the world.
The Swiss Federal Council decides to support the goal for net zero climate gases by 2050
Greencity is showcased at COP26 as an example of how 2000-Watt is an integral part of the net zero strategy for cities worldwide.
Davos: Greencity Zurich case study forges a path forward to inspire and certify 2000-Watt communities worldwide. Throughout Switzerland, 45 sites are certified: 28 as 2000-Watt Sites "in development", 11 received the award "in operation" and 6 sites have certification "in transformation".
